Dr. Chad Kinney is a faculty member in the Chemistry Department at Colorado State University Pueblo and the Director of the Institute of Cannabis Research (ICR) hosted at CSU Pueblo. 

Dr. Kinney earned a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Chemistry from the University of California San Diego and a Doctorate in Applied Chemistry from Colorado School of Mines. He completed a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at the US Geological Survey’s National Water Quality Laboratory as part of the Methods Research and Development Program. Dr. Kinney’s research program has primarily focused on the presence, fate, and effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products as environmental contaminants. 

With the creation of the ICR in 2016 at CSU Pueblo Dr. Kinney initiated research to develop novel extraction techniques for cannabinoids and in-extraction chemical modification of cannabinoids derived from hemp. Dr. Kinney was part of the team of faculty, administrators, and staff that developed the new Cannabis Biology and Chemistry (CBC) degree program being offered at CSU Pueblo.
